M4A (MPEG-4 Part 14)

M4A is a version of the MP4 (MPEG4) media container format created for audio files. This container contains an audio stream that uses AAC (lossy compression) or ALAC (lossless compression) codec. M4A was developed by Apple and is currently used in its own iTunes store. There is also a variation of the format with the extension M4P, which includes copyright protection.

Most multimedia players support this format (Apple iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.). Sometimes you may need to install additional codecs (for example, K-Lite Codec Pack). Since this format is highly specialized, sometimes to play it on devices it is easier to convert it into a more common format, such as WAV. This conversion will preserve the sound quality and allow to play the music on most devices.

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format)

WAV (or WAVE) is one of the standard audio formats, most often used to store audio files without compression (lossless) or with a low compression ratio. WAV is developed jointly by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 as an extension of RIFF format.

WAV gained great popularity in times of popularity of CDs, where it was used to store music. As a rule, one music album in good quality (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo format) was fit on one disc (approximately 700 MB).

The WAV format is very popular among users because it gives the best sound quality among digital audio formats and at the same time it is supported by many players and codecs.
